George T. Stagg Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

The proverbial powerhouse favorite of the Antique Collection, George T. Stagg, comes in at a lower 116.9 proof this year. This is the lowest proof in this whiskey’s history. Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley cites barrels located on the lower warehouse floors as the reason. “Many of the barrels for this year’s Stagg composite were taken from the first floor of the warehouse. The first floor is cooler with higher humidity levels, therefore the alcohol evaporates faster than the water.” The taste, however, is still what Stagg fans can expect, vanilla and toasted oak with a floral undertone, followed by a long finish of cherries, coffee and black pepper. Past releases of this uncut and unfiltered bourbon have won many top awards, including last year’s release capturing the Chairman’s Trophy at the Ultimate Spirits Competition. This year’s release contains bourbon from barrels filled in the spring of 2004. Storage location of these barrels varied across warehouses C, H, I, K, and Q. The evaporation loss for this year’s batch was 56%, a bit higher than last year’s release.

Buffalo Trace Distillery is the oldest continually operating distillery in the United States and includes the rich legacies of master distillers such as E.H. Taylor, Jr, George T. Stagg, Albert B. Blanton, Orville Schupp and Elmer T. Lee. Today, the distillery is still family-owned, operating on the same 130 acres of land adjacent the Kentucky River as it has for over 200 years.

Buffalo Trace has produced a wide array of bourbons and whiskeys, featuring several collections from the Antique and O.F.C. Vintages, to Van Winkle and E.H. Taylor. Their Stagg Jr. releases are limited edition barrel proof bourbons, much like the George T Stagg version included in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.

From Buffalo Trace’s Antique Collection, this special George T. Stagg is an uncut, unfiltered Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey distilled in spring 2003 and matured in Warehouses C, H, I, K, P, & Q.

This extremely hearty whiskey ages in new charred oak barrels for no less than 15 years. Straight out of the barrel, uncut and unfiltered, the taste is powerful, flavorful and intense. Appearance : Mahogany.

Nose : Raspberry and cashews, lemon peel, musty limestone, vanilla and a bit of cinnamon spice.

Palate: Cashews and pecans, under-ripe figs, a touch of coffee, plenty of spice like clove, nutmeg and black pepper. A hint of lighter more tropical flavors dance in the background, and the palate is left tingling from the proof and dried by the wood tannins.

Final Thoughts: The George T. Stagg makes your mouth water for more. There is plenty to keep your palate and your nose entertained for a couple pours. The surprising background flavors are my favorite here, but there is plenty to discover in the forefront.
